Older and Wiser (?)

Hi again

So, today's my birthday. 24 today. I feel like I should do or have 2 dozen of something, or do something involving 2 bottles of 12 year old scotch. Or watch lots of 24 . But instead I'm going to have a Thai food and movie night with a friend of mine. Which will probably turn into an all-night affair as there is an ice storm headed our way. Yep, it's my birthday all right, wouldn't be without crazy weather.

Off to make some tea.

But I'm a Grownup

Hi folks

Nope, haven't fallen off the face of the planet. Have been busy-ish. First thing, I've moved! I'm out on my own now, living in the big city. Very exciting, slightly scary as this is the most on my own I've been in a long while. Also, my internet isn't on in my new apartment yet, so I'm coming to you from a local cafe with wifi, so this will be short.

Second thing: Many of my jobs and other activities lately have reminded me of Smith and being a student. For example, I worked a call at one of the universities a couple weeks ago where they hire professionals (that's where I came in) to oversee the students (actors) and make sure all the work gets done as the students don't have to be there all the time. The students were incredibly obnoxious. And I couldn't help wondering if I and my friends were just as rude and obnoxious when we were students. I know in some respects we were, but wow.

I also keep getting asked if I'm a student (at the uni call and elsewhere). I want to respond to these people, "No, I'm an adult, dammit!" but I know that won't help matters.

The cafe I'm in currently also reminds me a lot of Noho. When I walked in it was like I was transported back to Main St, complete with girls with mohawks and being chatted up by the waitress. It's very artsy and wonderful.

Anyway, I should go as they are closing soon. More when I have internet of my own.

Terra Diablo

So I just saw a TV ad for Terra Diablo's new album.

1. I didn't know they had a new album.
2. I didn't know they made it to the U.S.

This is amazing! I got hooked on this band while I was in Scotland 3 years ago. I am so happy! Off to buy the album. You should buy it, too. Go here and listen to songs: terradiablo.com . The album is also sold on itunes and Amazon. Slightly annoyed with myself because they played Chicago a month ago and I didn't know, but that's ok. There'll be other gigs.

Boys and Toys

As some of you may know, last week was due to be an interesting experiment for me work-wise. I was in a space that uses gridwalking (tightrope walking along pipes in the air, in this location about 40 feet in the air). However, the space put a catwalk system in over the pipes (yay), but you still needed to clip in to a lifeline/fall arrest system as there were no handrails (boo). Also, many of the lights were under the catwalks, so you had to lean all the way under them or sit on the pipes anyway. More fun was that the grate was installed upside down, resulting in various people cutting themselves pretty badly. I was not one of them as I was ground crew for the week except for 5 minutes of a notes call, wherein I decided that in future I am definitely ground crew. Otherwise, uneventful in the work sphere.

Yesterday I got to help take my brother back to school. For the record, he is perfectly capable of handling this on his own normally. Except this summer he bought himself a new toy: a motorcycle. He realized that he could not ride it and drive his car back to school at the same time, so... He rode his bike, my father drove his car, and I drove my car to be able to take my dad back home. People have emailed me things about "What's your carbon footprint?" I laugh at them and hit delete.

In other news, I need books to read. Any subject or genre is fair game. Suggest some.

Hello World

Hello folks

This is the start of my new, and first ever, blog. I'm still getting used to this, so the format and styling are probably going to change a bit. Anyway.

A little bit about the title of the blog (which might change shortly, too). I'm a theatre electrician and lighting designer. That's my thing. Light is fascinating to me: its shape, color, texture, the way it moves, and most importantly, the lack of it in specific places also known as shadows.

I once was told, when I was a tap dancer, that the sounds we made were not important. It was the silence and the anticipation between the sounds that was. The silence was what we should play with, not the sound. To me, this is the same for lighting. As silence is to sound, shadow is to light.

That's all for now; I need some sleep.
